IndiGo strengthened its leadership in India's aviation sector by achieving a record 66.3% domestic market share in June, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The milestone comes as Air India reduced capacity across several domestic and international routes as part of its network optimization strategy.

IndiGo Maintains Strong Growth
India's largest airline transported 8.92 million passengers in June, reinforcing its dominant position in the domestic aviation market. The latest figures highlight IndiGo's continued expansion as passenger demand remains steady and the carrier adds capacity across key routes.
Air India Sees Passenger Numbers Decline
Air India, which holds a 23.9% market share, carried 3.2 million passengers in June, marking its lowest monthly passenger count of the year. Earlier in January, the airline had reached a high of 4 million passengers.
The Tata Group-owned carrier has been restructuring its operations after reporting significant financial losses in FY25. As part of its ongoing network rationalization, Air India has temporarily reduced services on several domestic and international routes through the end of August.
According to the airline, suspended capacities are expected to be gradually restored from September, subject to operational requirements and aircraft availability.
International Operations Remain Limited
Air India also confirmed that services to destinations including Chicago and Washington will continue to remain suspended for now due to fleet availability constraints.
The airline is focusing on optimizing aircraft utilization while addressing operational challenges before restoring its full international schedule.
Akasa Air Continues to Expand
Akasa Air also recorded its strongest market performance of the year, increasing its domestic market share to 6.4%.
The airline posted an impressive 92.2% passenger load factor, the highest among Indian carriers in June, reflecting strong demand across its network.
Akasa is continuing its expansion plans despite industry challenges and has announced significant investment plans to support future growth.
Airlines Face Geopolitical Challenges
India's aviation sector continues to navigate operational pressures arising from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have affected international flight schedules and capacity planning.
The Gulf region remains one of the most important international markets for Indian airlines, particularly for carriers with extensive operations across West Asia. Changes in regional airspace availability and route adjustments have prompted several airlines to revise schedules while maintaining operational efficiency.
Despite these challenges, domestic air travel demand remains robust, with IndiGo further strengthening its position as the country's leading airline.
